Question: I am running out of disk space and need space to store more pictures, what can I do?

Answer:
This is a common problem for people who get lots of pictures or videos/movies or music on their computer. With today's newer hard drives on newer computers it does not usually occur as soon but still occurs. On older computers it occurs sooner. I have bumped the problem myself as I have tens of thousands of picture files on my computer and a number of videos (mostly of my lectures).

Obviously one solution is to go buy a newer computer with a larger hard drive, but your computer may be perfectly fine for you except out of disk space. Money often is another issue and changing everything to new is a major issue.

Another way would be to go buy a removable hard drive that plugs in the USB port.  It works just like any other hard drive on the computer (gets a drive letter (usually E or higher).

It takes no special expertise to start using (just plug in the USB cable in the USB port (small rectangle) (most PCs have 4 or more of these ports) on the computer and if it has a power cord plug it in the wall. (some get their power thru the USB cable).

You can look in Computer/My Computer (depending on whether you are using Windows 7, Vista or XP) in the Start menu and find what the drive letter is.  You can then go to the folder where pictures/video/music files are and just drag that folder (or folders) to the new drive icon in Computer/My Computer.  Make sure they moved there (click in that drive and confirm the files are in the new drive) and you can then delete them where they were stored on the PC and You now have more drive space.

You can copy other files on the removable drive also.  It works like the built- in hard drive. One nice thing is you can unplug the drive and take it somewhere and plug in a another computer and all the files are available to you that are on the removable drive.

I would suggest as time allows to still copy the pictures to CD or DVD so you have a safer backup of them.  You can get a terabyte  drive for about $100 or a 500 meg for less.  They are sold in Walmart, Office Depot and other similar stores and computer stores and online.

Send me your questions about computers to me at the paper or to my e-mail dwight@dwightwatt.com and tell me you read this in the paper. I will pick a question to answer each week.
