#432 - NCAA proposes to have colleges start setting fund to pay athletes(Watt Thoughts)

This is crazy on paying college athletics. Baker, NCAA president, claims to create a more equitable playing field, to the n allow schools to directly pay athletics at richest highest level colleges. He wants $30,000 per year for at at least half athletes at a college in this fund so meets Title IX but no where I see how administered and if that is amount paid to half of the athletes or if the football and basketball male players all get and larger amounts and the women not required paid of the ones on non revenue sports. And colleges all claiming losing money on sports (while paying coaches more and more ) and raising fees on students and supports and forgetting sports was to be a benefit for students to enjoy and meet others and alumni to have pride in their school. And the athletic scholarships to help the athletizes get a college education. With regional sports networks failing now, Disney realizing ESPN is not a cash cow but costing with all it keeps doing like having more bowl games (42 this year) and most owned and operated by Disney/ESPN and question if advertising is making the broadcasts of small ones make money much expenses of the actual game (not much attendance at most). Stories I keep reading are that Disney is trying to dump ESPN as not the money maker for the. We have forgotten what higher education is supposed to do and pouring money into it having professional sports. We need to look back at what higher education should be and look at ways to bring down expenses in it and bring down tuition and fees (and if you want to raise more money from students now you do not raise tuition, but add on another fee, so tuition is just a small part of bill, where it used to be the full costs of taking classes. Biden's proposals to make tuition free at different colleges people will discover if implemented, does not mean free college when they find out price of all the fees. https://www.cnn.com/2023/12/05/sport/ncaa-new-tier-to-compensate-athletes-directly-spt-intl/index.html Disclaimer: I am a football season ticket holder at Georgia Southern University since 1986 and member of athletic supports there and also at Winthrop University. I enjoy attending college athletic events (well usually not sure about the football game I went to at LSU a few years ago when I was not able to see or get to my seat with fear of heights kicking bad.). I also financially support the foundations at Winthrop University and Georgia Northwestern Technical College to support academic programs for many years. I also went out for the initial soccer team at Winthrop but dropped it when inquired just before the season. I am also a IT instructor at several colleges. Nothing in this article has endorsement of any college I am associated with and represents my personal opinions only.

It may be religious at times, political at times, and at other times just my reactions on something happening out there. It will often be like an op-ed article. If I do what I intend, you will at times want to shout I agree, other times you will want to say Dwight has really lost it now, but most importantly I want to challenge you to think.
