#428 - Community colleges or junior colleges (Watt Thoughts)

Article below that attacks bachelor degree graduation rates of students attending community colleges. There is not a full understanding of what a community college is vs junior colleges. Very few (and only recently started occurring) community colleges give bachelors degrees. Community colleges grew out of junior colleges and technical colleges. Technical colleges are to prepare people for jobs and not looking at for year degrees although they have added that in their missions. Junior colleges primary mission is to get students first two years of college and that they will go on to four year colleges.

Apparently not understanding community colleges serve two purposes one as they state to start students to 4 year degree second never mentioned is to prepare students for entry jobs in technical and career fields with diplomas and associate degrees this second group getting these as terminal degrees like bachelor degree at four year colleges at Georgia Northwestern Technical College where I teach I am preparing students both directions. Do we count four year colleges as failures for few students getting a master's degree in 7 years from starting to college?

I have taught primarily at technical colleges in my career, but have also taught at four year colleges and universities.

This is a little article I am doing across the Internet of my personal opinions. This reflects my personal thoughts. I try to write several times a month on a variety of subjects. It may be religious at times, political at times, and at other times just my reactions on something happening out there. It will often be like an op-ed article. If I do what I intend, you will at times want to shout I agree, other times you will want to say Dwight has really lost it now, but most importantly I want to challenge you to think.
